Since checking emails has become one of the morning rituals for many, a lot of folks prefer sending themselves an email about something they want to get done.
However, if you’re one of those who get tons of emails every day, those reminder emails can get really buried and go unnoticed sometimes.
So, what’s the solution? Create a to-do list panel right inside your gmail inbox and turn it into a powerful to-do app. Here’s how to do it.
Step #1: Compose a New Email for Yourself. Create a Subject Line (TODO: get milk) | Enter “nm” in the Body
Step #2: Open the email and choose “Filter Messages Like This” from the drop-down menu to Create an Email Filter. (Screenshots Below)
Step #3: Create a New Label for Your Email.
Step #4: Apply the Custom Label
Step #5: Go to Gmail Settings
Step #6: Click on Inbox tab under Settings. Change Inbox Type from “Default” to “Priority” in the Drop-down Menu
Step #7: Choose More Options under Options Menu alongside the Starred List
Step #8: Choose Your Desired Label (e.g, To-Do List) and Click Save.
Now, you should be able to view the email inbox split into three different panels positioned vertically, as shown in the screenshot below.
While this works fine for many, there are some who want to customize this view further as per their specific requirements.
Some users want to have multiple inboxes for each of their custom labels. This can be done by using Multiple Inboxes/Preview Pane features available on Gmail labs under the hood.
Here’s what it may look like (depending on your customization)
Priority Inbox with Preview Pane Feature Enabled
Default Inbox with Preview Pane Feature Enabled
How to Split Your Default Gmail Inbox into Multiple Inboxes
The following steps will help you split your default Gmail inbox into multiple inboxes.
Step #1: Go to Gmail Settings
Step #2: Click on Labs tab and Enable both Multiple Inboxes and Preview Pane options
Step #3: Scroll down below and Click on Save Changes (At this point, your Gmail inbox will reload)
You should be able to see the Preview Pane toggle button enabled in your inbox.
Step #4: Go to Gmail Settings again – you should see the Multiple Inboxes tab. Click on the tab and Customize it as per your choice. For example, you can type “label:todo” in Pane 0 and “is:unread” in Pane 1 under the Search Query.
Similarly, you can customize the number of entries (conversations) and the position of the inboxes as per your choice. I recommend trying different configuration options and choose the view you like. After all, your ultimate goal is to get more out of your inbox and improve your productivity.
At this point, you should be able to see your inbox split into multiple inboxes, offering you a clear view of each label as configured by you.
